    Dr. Ingrid Gerling, a violinist native of Porto Alegre, Brazil, has performed extensively as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and conductor throughout the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia. She completed her D.M.A. at the Moores School of Music under the tutelage of Frank Huang, concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. Currently she holds the positions of Orchestra Director and Professor of Violin and Viola at San Jacinto College and Orchestra Director and Professor of Violin at the University of St. Thomas. She is also on faculty for the American Festival of the Arts Chamber Music Academy. Named a “String Diva” by Arts and Culture Magazine, Dr. Gerling is known for her incredibly active and diverse musical pursuits. Recordings of Dr. Gerling can be heard on the IBS CLASSICAL and PARMA labels.

    Dr. Gerling has acquired extensive experience as an orchestral musician and leader. She is a member of the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, the San Antonio Chamber Orchestra, and has performed frequently with the Houston Ballet and Mercury Baroque orchestras. She has served as guest concertmaster for the Pittsburgh Opera Theatre and the Houston Civic Symphony. She is the former concertmaster of the Moores Symphony Orchestra, the Moores Opera and Ballet Orchestras, as well as the Houston Heights Orchestra. Dr. Gerling was featured on KUHA’s Classical Classroom radio show alongside NYPhil concertmaster Glenn Dicterow where they both discussed and explained the role of the concertmaster. Dr. Gerling also minored in orchestral conducting during her doctorate degree to further her orchestral leadership training.

    Dr. Gerling is a very passionate and dedicated chamber musician. She is a member of the Axiom Quartet, the quartet-in-residence at the University of St. Thomas, and also has a duo with concert pianist, Dr. Andreea Mut. Dr. Gerling was selected to be a DaCamera Young Artist Fellow for the 2015-2017 season, a highly competitive engagement which led her to perform numerous chamber music concerts throughout Houston. As an avid performer of contemporary music, Dr. Gerling’s Houston performances include regular appearances with Musiqa, the Foundation of Modern Music, AURA and Aperio.

    Beyond her extensive accomplishments on the violin and as a conductor, Dr. Gerling also minored in Vocal Jazz performance in her undergraduate and master’s degrees. She regularly performs as a jazz vocalist, concentrating on Brazilian bossa nova and Brazilian traditional chôro.
