    Penny Hogan, soprano

    Penny Hogan, a native of Iowa, graduated with honors from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa receiving a Bachelor of Music Education in voice. She received her Master of Music from the University of Michigan in Vocal Performance/Opera. She is a member of the honor society Pi Kappa Lambda; a member of TEXOMA NATS, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and a member of the South Texas Chapter NATS where she has served as Auditions Chair. Penny also served as Auditions Coordinator for the Natchez Festival of Music in Natchez, MS.

    Penny has enjoyed a successful career in opera, musical theatre, oratorio and concert recitalist. She has performed with opera houses and symphonies throughout the United States. She has been heard as soprano soloist in Messiah, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Elijah, Mozart Requiem, Faure Requiem to name a few. She is a former regional finalist of the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions and a winner of the Shoshana Foundation Richard F. Gold Career Grant. She remains actively singing in the Central Texas area and at UMHB. She has sung recently with the Temple Symphony Orchestra, the Bell Civic Chorale, The UMHB Wind Ensemble, The San Gabriel Chorale, as well as recitals with her husband, bass, George Hogan. Penny also enjoys stage directing musicals and opera. She has an active voice studio at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Texas and the Conservatory. She teaches vocal literature and serves as Area Coordinator for Applied Studies at UMHB.

    Penny has taught at several universities over the years: Texas Christian University, Oral Roberts University, Simpson College, Roanoke College, Southwestern and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary before coming to teach at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Texas nineteen years ago. Her voice students have been NATS finalists, gone on to master’s programs and many are pursuing professional careers in a variety of musical genres.

    Penny is a retired member of AGMA and Actor’s Equity. She is a member of TMEA and TEXOMA NATS.
